Book Review: Food Rules by Michael Pollan
(Disclaimer: I may have liked this book because of the cover. Isn’t it beautiful. I love the green.)
I completely concur with this book. It is simple, straight forward and practical. Many people have said that this is the “lite” version of Pollan’s other books, The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food. I have not read either yet but based on just the titles I’m sure it is true.
If you want to eat healthier and you don’t want to read a lengthy book, this is the book for you. It is composed of 64 rules in which none are more than a page long. Most people could finish it in 1-2 hours (I took longer because I kept reading pages over and over again…just hoping it will all sink in). Every rule is worthy of consideration and implementation into your life for healthier and more responsible food experiences.
I especially took note of how it discredits a lot of cultural influences on our eating habits and sets guidelines on how to create a new culture of eating. It also discusses the impact of processed foods vs. whole foods in our diets. We’ll probably keep this out and about the house as a reminder of our commitment to eat more whole foods, for our health as well as the environment.
P.S. Still looking for people to join us for the Brontë Sisters Book Club!!

he was on oprah, and he made perfect sense. everything he said was totally how people should eat. he talked about how he loves french fries and that he doesnt deny himself anything. as long as he is willing to make it himself. he said how annoying it is to make french fries so he only eats them maybe twice a month. i bet if kalob had to make his very own swiss rolls he wouldnt eat like four a day.
That’s how his book is…it just makes sense. I bet he wouldn’t either! He MIGHT just have to make more no-bake cookies, they are easier.
Thanks for stopping by The Sister Letters! I recently started reading “Food Rules.” LOVE IT! It really resonates with me and how I want my family to eat. Here are a few more you may want to look at: “The Kind Diet” by Alicia Silverstone and “Eating Animals” by Jonathan Safran Foer–both excellent. All of this is completely changing my view of food and how we eat. I’m so excited to make more changes. Your family is beautiful and I’m looking forward to following your blog!
